New VW SUV to be Called Volkswagen Atlas

For those that were unaware, Volkswagen has quietly been putting together a new mid-sized crossover set to be released sometime in 2017. Thanks to a bit of sleuthing by the German-language affiliate of Automotive News, Automobilwoche, we now know that the new VW SUV will go by the name of "Atlas."

That breaks the trend of Volkswagen having named their other SUVs with monikers that start with the letter "T" like the  2017 Volkswagen Touareg and the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan. The easier to pronounce, American style name is unique to the North American market and had been a closely guarded secret since the vehicle was previewed as the CrossBlue concept three years ago.

Of course, more important than its name is the fact that this new SUV will be the first U.S.-built model on the VW brand's modular transverse matrix platform known as "MQB". It will be big enough to seat seven people comfortably and should slot nicely right in between the smaller VW Tiguan and the more lavish VW Touareg. It also will be built right here in the United States at the automaker's Chattanooga, TN manufacturing facility, which is another bonus to a vehicle that we obviously are very much looking forward to stocking at our dealership.

It will be several months before it finds its way to your friendly neighborhood Volkswagen dealership in Indianapolis, IN, however, which means our customers will have to be patient for now. Our dedicated sales team can also set you up on a test drive of any of the new VW cars or SUVs currently in our inventory!
