The Taos gets an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. The automaker's 4MOTION AWD is available. The Mazda CX-30 has two fewer forward gears, at six total, and is fitted with AWD in every trim. These setups give the Taos a big advantage in our next segment: fuel economy.
With up to an EPA-estimated 28/36 MPG (City/Highway)1 rating, the VW Taos is an eco-conscious ride that's also a blast to drive, thanks in part to its turbocharged engine. The Mazda CX-30 only manages to reach an EPA-estimated 24/31 MPG (City/Highway)2 due to penalties brought on by its larger engine, fewer transmission gears, and standard all-wheel drive (AWD).
Not only is the new VW Taos more fuel-efficient, but it can also travel farther on a full tank. Its 13.2-gallon gas tank capacity is half a gallon larger than in the Mazda CX-30, which only holds 12.7 gallons.

These small SUVs are similarly sized and compete in the same vehicle segment, but still, one is noticeably more spacious and practical than the other. At 175.9 inches long, the Taos is a bit bigger than the Mazda CX-30, which measures 173 inches in length. The Volkswagen has a longer wheelbase, too, by 1.5 inches.

Comfort inside the Taos comes from its airy interior, providing 99.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, along with available CloudTex and cloth seating surfaces or leather upholstery. A heated steering wheel comes standard, while remote engine start and a Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control system are popular available features.
Since the Mazda CX-30 has smaller cabin dimensions, it may feel more cramped inside. Drivers looking for leather seat upholstery won't find it until the sixth equipment level of this Mazda SUV. In contrast, the fourth and final Tao trim, the SEL, treats occupants to leather seating surfaces.
