Transfer Case Overview
A transfer case is a part of the drivetrain of a car that is four-wheel drive. The transfer case transfers power from the transmission to the different drive shafts and axles of the car. If you have a car that is four-wheel drive the transmission is not going to be able to transfer power to the rear and front axles at the same time so the transfer case helps to do that so that the car can drive. The transfer case is a sealed gearbox that does need to be lubricated and when the transfer case goes bad you are not going to be able to drive your car at all.
What Happens when a Transfer Case Goes Bad?
There are some issues to watch for when your transfer case goes bad. The first is that the car is not going to be able to drive. The transfer case splits the power from the front and the back so when the transfer case goes out, the car is not going to run. You may be able to drive in two-wheel drive if you can swap the car from four-wheel to two-wheel drive but for the most part you are not going to be able to drive. If you suspect that your transfer case might be going bad you might notice difficulty shifting, you might notice that the vehicle is making strange noises, and you might notice that the vehicle goes in and out of four-wheel drive while you are driving. These are all major issues and if you do keep driving with the transfer case going bad you are going to cause damage to your four-wheel drive, potentially damage to the transmission and even damage to the entire drive train.Â
